Vehicle Travel in Mexico

If you are traveling into Mexico with your personal car you will need:

Tourist Permit

  • A permit is required for each adult traveling beyond 35 km of the border and must be shown at the
    border to cross into Mexico.
  • Apply online at https://www.inm.gob.mx/fmme/publico/en/solicitud.html.
  • Your permit is good for 6 months. The cost may vary depending on how long you plan to stay.
  • Print both your permit and receipt and carry them with you.

Immigration Pre-Authorization

  • Apply online 11-60 days before your trip at https://www.inm.gob.mx/sae/publico/en/preautorizacion.html (Click on the link at the top of the page labeled “Inglés” if Spanish is displayed.)
  • Print this document—you will need it to apply for your vehicle import permit and once you are in
  • Mexico, where you must attend an Immigration Office to exchange your printed pre-authorization for an Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM) immigration document.

Temporary Vehicle Import Permit

  • Apply 11 – 60 days before entry to Mexico at https://www.banjercito.com.mx/registroVehiculos/
  • Run-up to Christmas is busiest season – apply as early as possible. (Tip – do not use a period in any data entry field.)
  • Limit of 7,716 lbs GVWR except RVs
  • When complete, print the confirmation page and write down the “leaf” number.
  • Apply the permit decal to upper center windshield and print your import permit.

Coming Home

  • It’s very important to cancel your vehicle import permit BEFORE you leave Mexico – you may not be issued another permit if you fail to do this.
  • Stop at the Mexico Customs office on your route home–usually about 15 miles south of the border.
  • Your deposit will be refunded but not if you are late returning to cross the border.
